Maurice Smith was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2009. Previously, Maurice was a lawyer with Nova Scotia Legal Aid and Senior Counsel and managing lawyer in the Antigonish/Port Hawkesbury office.

He has been actively involved in the community through a number of organizations, including: Chair and founding member of Antigonish Town and County Palliative Care Society, founding and current Board member of L’Arche Antigonish Foundation, Board member of Crumbs From The Table and Board member of Recovery House.

Moe has also been involved in the past with the Board of the Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre, St. Francis Xavier University Art Gallery, Guysborough Antigonish Pictou Arts & Culture Council, the Naomi Society, the Canadian Association for Community Living, and Antigonish and Area Homemakers Society.
