Local MLAs Celebrate 1 Year Anniversary of NDP Victory
June 18, 2010

(Halifax, N.S.) -- On June 9th local MLAs celebrated the first anniversary of their historic majority government victory.

Lenore Zann, John MacDonell, and Gary Burrill took some time to reflect on the past year and to discuss how the NDP government has been keeping its commitments to make life better for families.

"It took a lot of work to get to this point and I'm very proud of what we've accomplished in our first year." says MacDonell. "Rural communities will benefit significantly from the two largest infrastructure budgets in our province’s history."

Over the past 12 months approximately $48 million has been spent on 29 projects including highway repairs and construction in Hants East, Truro - Bible Hill, and Colchester - Musqudoboit Valley.

First-time MLA Zann echoes MacDonell's sentiments and adds that she is honoured to be part of a government that is keeping its promise to reduce poverty by investing in more public housing and day care spaces across the Province, and is the first government in 10 years to have increased funding for women's shelters and transition houses. She also says she is extremely proud that the government's renewable energy strategy is a North American benchmark.

"Our strategy to produce 40% of all electricity from renewable sources by 2020 is the most aggressive anywhere in North America," says Zann. "This not only helps prevent climate change but has the potential to create thousands of good jobs our economy needs over the coming years."

Burrill who like Zann, is also a first-time MLA says government has taken many steps in the right direction to assist seniors, most notably the elimination of provincial income tax for those receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

“This was a much-needed change,” says Burrill, “and one I’m particularly proud of.”
